Inside of a piano

By Clare

Our front piano is having a little “attitude problem”. It’s showing attitude by not stoping the sound when we play Eb and release the pedal! Haha…just kidding! This may be something to do with weather or humidity?! So we had someone looked at it!

Many of us who own pianos don’t know what the inside looks like, so I took the opportunity to take some photos to show you what is actually behind and underneath the piano keys!

The whole keyboard part can be taken out. That includes the hammers, they’re all part of one big mechanism like this. When it’s out like this, it doesn’t make any sound when you press on the keys because there are no strings for the hammers to hit anymore!

Some close-ups of the keyboard and the action parts

When I was a kid, I used to take off the sound board on my upright piano ever since I saw how the tuner did it. Something about watching the action while playing I find fascinating! Taking out parts from a grand is just as fascinating! Did you know what the inside of a piano looks like?
